The Big Five Personality Test Essay - 916 Words

The Big Five personality test was created in the 1970 s by two independent research teams. One team with Paul Costa and Robert McCrae, and the other with Warren and Lewis Goldberg. The two teams had different methods that they tested but in the end they both ended up with the same results. The results were that no matter what culture, race, or language people have their personality fits into five dimensions of personality. The five dimensions were created after reviewing lots of surveys and data analysis called factor analysis. Now, just forty years later the Big Five is one of the most commonly accepted personality models. Analyses shows that personality changes throughout life as different personality traits are used and forgotten. The results are generalized and don’t always apply to people but typically the results are correct. The Big Five is a personality test asks questions about how you see yourself. Some questions were â€Å"I see myself as someone who tends to find fault with others† and â€Å"I see myself as someone who does things efficiently†. Each question is answered on a scale 1 (strongly disagreeing) to 5 (strongly agreeing). The test is around 45 questions long. Scores were represented in percentiles so that comparison could be made between people. The percentiles were based on groups determined by location and age. My scores were for someone around the age of 18 in North Carolina. My book character’s scores were from people around the age of 17 in the UK.
